The Dress

Sizing 101 – Street size versus dress label size.

Unfortunately wedding label sizes are very misrepresentative – wedding gowns run small. Typically the wedding label size is 1-2 sizes larger than your typical dress size. So if you usually wear a size 6, your wedding dress would probably be a size 8 or 10. Do be careful as there are some American designers that are using standard sizing. For example Melissa Sweet typically runs big.

Why do women sell their dresses?

The whole concept of whiteCHICAGO started when Ursula got married and didn’t want to keep her dress in her soon to be “shared” closet or in her mom’s attic.  It was a beautiful gown that was just too nice – it was a shame and a waste not be worn again.  Besides the recycling aspect of selling the dress, there is also the emotional aspect.  It feels good to give something you love to someone else.  The other reason, of course, is recouping some money.  After the wedding, it is a perfect time to collect some cash that can be used for a new home, an anniversary trip or even starting a savings account for your new family.  We like to tell brides that one special thing they can do is buy a bracelet, a necklace or some earrings that can be worn all the time in memory of the wedding day.

How do I measure myself?

The following are some tips on how to take measurements.  We suggest that if you are buying or selling a gown you follow our advice so everyone will be measuring the same way!

Use a soft cloth measuring tape and do not pull the tape tight – leave it a little loose (1 fingertip).  It is best to have a seamstress or someone else take your measurements.

BUST: Measure with your bra on and place the tape measure around your bust line.  Make sure that the tape is around the widest part of the back and straight across the bust where it sticks out the most.

WAIST: Measure your natural waistline at its smallest point, usually above the belly button.

HIPS: Measure your hips at the largest part usually at the level of the hip bone. It is usually six or seven inches below your natural waist.

Dry-cleaning 101: What are some tips on taking care of your gown after the wedding?

First of all, the most important thing is to get the gown dry-cleaned ASAP!  Even if you haven’t quite figured out if you are going to sell or preserve your gown.  Stains set and the cost of getting it dry-cleaned is well worth it even though after the wedding it seems like a lot of money.

We recommend bringing the gown to someone that specializes in wedding gowns – don’t be fooled by the neon sign that says “we dry-clean wedding gowns”.  We have seen so many gowns that were dry-cleaned incorrectly and ruined.  Typically, dry-cleaning will cost $180+ with an average of $250 and the standard turn-around time is one month.  If the charge is lower, beware.

You first want to inspect your gown before you take it to the cleaners.  Note any tears, missing beads, stains and broken zippers or straps.  We recommend that you have the cleaner fix any beading before dry-cleaning.  After you pick up your gown, make sure you inspect it even if you are preserving it in a box.  If you snipped off the hanging straps before your wedding, make sure safety pins are not supporting your gown on the hanger – they leave holes in the fabric and sometimes the metal reacts with the material and stains.

Do realize that even the best dry-cleaners cannot get out every stain.  A lot of times the stains at the hem do not come out but if you want to resell your gown, this is usually not a problem as most dresses can be shortened.  If you are selling your gown, make note of every little spot, tear or issue as this will save you a lot of hassle and time in the long run – you want to make the sales experience pleasant for you and the new bride!

If stains are in more obvious places, get creative and have a pillow made out of the fabric or keep the gown and put it in the “Dress-up-Closet” for your children (this is what our friend Mindy is doing with her gown – we think it is such a great idea!).

Alterations: How much can you alter a dress?

Alterations are always possible but it is easier to make a dress smaller. Wedding dresses typically can be taken in 1 – 2 sizes without many problems and it is usually possible to take a size 10 down to a 2 especially if you are 5’ 5” or taller.   Making gowns larger is more difficult but sometimes panels can be added or the waist line can be brought up (you need extra length in order for this to work).  If in doubt, get a seamstresses opinion before you purchase a dress.

Alterations: How do alterations work?

For most brides, this is the first time that they are having a dress "fit" perfectly to their body. It is an exciting time but it is also confusing.

The most important thing to do is find someone that has experience with wedding gowns. Most bridal salons have a great seamstress department and if you buy your gown "off-the-rack" the store should have solid recommendations.

Typically you should have 3 fittings that start about 2-3 months before the wedding date. If your weight is fluctuating, you should talk to the seamstress before your first appointment so any scheduling adjustments can be made.

1st appointment you should bring your shoes or at least a shoe with the heel height you plan on wearing and your undergarments. For most gowns, cups are sewn in so you don't have to worry about wearing a bra but if you want to wear a bustier, you should bring it along too.

2nd appointment is usually 1 ½ months before the date.

3rd appointment is 1-2 weeks before the wedding. Only minor adjustments should be made and this is when you learn how to bustle your gown (if you have a bustle). We recommend bringing someone with you so you can show them how the bustle works. If not, just remember to ask someone to help you after the ceremony. One note, have someone bring some safety pins in case a guest steps on the back of your dress and pulls out the stitching in one of the bustle ties.

Dress pick-up occurs 1-3 days before the wedding or before you leave. The seamstress should have the gown pressed/steamed and packaged.

Insider Insights:

  • We know that hems on model's gowns touch the floor but in reality the tip of your shoes should show to ensure you don't trip - this is the last thing you want to happen when you are announced!
  • If you are traveling ... don't worry. Try and keep the dress hanging but if it gets folded it will be fine. As soon as you get to your destination (the place where you will be putting on the dress) take the gown out of the bag so it can hang loose.
  • Last but not least, your dress will get dirty. We hope not before the wedding but if someone accidentally steps on your train or if there is a spill, try to stay calm as most people will not notice - they will be looking at your face and your over-all glow. DON'T LET IT RUIN YOUR DAY!

What questions should I ask the seller?

You will want to get as much information as you can before you buy the dress.  Just as important as the dress specifics, you will want to know as much as you can about the seller so scammers don’t take advantage of you.

You should ask the seller the 5 W’s:

Who:  Who are you?
Find out all their contact information and try and get a good feel of who they are by asking a lot of questions about their wedding and dress shopping experience.

What
:  What is your dress like?
Make sure that you thoroughly review the posting and additional information provided by the seller.  The key factors are the size, condition, measurements and alterations. Ask a lot of question about the condition and if the gown has any flaws, ask for pictures. If there are flaws, use these “imperfections” to be creative.  Usually marks on the bottom can hemmed, if there are stains sometimes you can add embellishments (a broach if near the waistline, a sash, a silk flower, etc.)  Finally, ask them about their measurements and determine when they were taken (before or after the wedding).

Where: Where did you buy the dress?
Make sure it is from a reputable place.  Confirm that the gown is authentic and ask if they are the original owner.  Research the retail price of the gown online and ask the seller for a copy of their receipt.

When:  When did you buy the dress and when did you wear it?
This will confirm the age of the gown.

Why:  Why are you selling the gown?
This will assist you in analyzing if this is a scam, etc.

Alterations: What should I look for in a dress that has been altered?

What should I look for in a dress that has been altered?
The most important thing is fit.  You will want to either try on the gown or get the measurements from the seller.  Ask the seller if they are measuring the same way you are (see question: How do I measure myself?) to ensure the correct size.  In addition ask when they measured themselves – before of after the wedding.

How are prices determined?

Most prices are determined by the seller.  Listers can set their own prices and usually they price dresses based on the condition and style.  Consignor dresses (the gowns instore@whiteCHICAGO) are priced 30-70% below retail.  We use a proprietary model that factors in designer, style year, price paid, retail price and condition.

Can I try on the gowns?

All dresses instore@whiteCHICAGO can be tried on at our store.  You can make an appointment online (link) or call us at 312.397.1571.  If the gown is Listed by an individual, most have final sales policies and don’t ship for try-ons although some will allow try-ons if the bride lives close by.  If they do ship for try-ons or provide returns, most brides have restocking policies (5-10%).

If you don’t live in the area where the gown is located, you can request that the gown be sent to whiteCHICAGO so you can set up an appointment to try it on.

What if a gown I am looking for is not posted?

You can sign up for our weekly new dress email (link to sign up) and/or you can add the dress to your Wishlist. (link to wishlist screen)  Here you can input the designer and style name or number you are looking for and you will be alerted as soon as the gown is posted!

What if I cannot contact the seller of the gown?

If you have tried multiple times over a week time-frame, please let us know (link to contact us).  We will do our best to contact the seller.  Most times the gown has sold and they have not removed the Listing.  We greatly appreciate the information and apologize in advance for the inconvenience.

Can I update my Listing?

Yes, you can update your Listing anytime. If pictures are modified or changed they are submitted to us for review to ensure integrity and professionalism.

How long does it take to sell my gown?

We get this question all the time and it really depends on the price and the style and of course, finding someone that falls in love with your gown.

What if my gown doesn't sell?

If your gown is Listed, you can remove your Listing at any time or you can renew your Listing after 12 months for the standard listing fee.

If your gown is Consigned, we contact you upon or near expiration so that you may arrange for delivery/pickup or donation. Our annual dress drive for Brides Against Breast Cancer (link to http://bridesagainstbreastcancer.org/) is held in the Spring.  A tax deductible receipt is provided for your records and your donation helps create wishes for patients with breast cancer.

Does my gown qualify?

We only approve designer gowns that we think will sell.  We are considered by some too strict but in our experience it makes the entire process a lot easier for both the buyer and the seller.

Bridal
– (online and instore)

  • Gowns must be new, sample or once-wed (twice wed gowns can be difficult to alter and usually show too much wear)
  • Gowns Listed online must have retailed for $1,000 or more excluding taxes and alterations and proof of purchase/receipt is strongly advised
  • Gowns Consigned instore must have retailed for $1,500 or more excluding taxes and alterations and proof of purchase/receipt is required
  • Gowns must be three (3) style years or less old
  • Once-wed gowns must be dry-cleaned
  • Designer label must be sewn inside
  • Must be in amazing condition (any flaws must be noted)

Maids & Moms
(online only)

  • Gowns must be three (3) style years or less old
  • Once-wed dresses must be dry-cleaned
  • Dresses must be in amazing condition (any flaws must be noted)
  • Proof of purchase/receipt is strongly advised
What happens if someone requests to try-on my gown instore at whiteCHICAGO?

If you think you have a qualified buyer, you can turn your Listing into a Consignment and send the gown to the store.  If the bride buys the gown, you receive 50% of the sale.  If the bride does not buy the gown and your gown qualifies for instore Consignment, the gown can remain in our inventory for 9 months.

What is the difference between Listing and Consigning my gown?

If you would like to sell your gown, you can do it one of two ways; you can List or you can Consign (link to screen 2/59).   Both options offer great benefits, it just depends on how much work you want to do.

Listing Details (Brides, Maids & Moms):

  • You pay a one time listing fee ($50 for bridal, $25 for maids and moms)
  • You keep 100% of the sale
  • You control the sales process – great if you have the time and patience to deal with a lot of questions and inquiries
  • You can convert your Listing to a Consignment anytime- if a bride is very interested in your gown but wants to try it on, it can be shipped to whiteCHICAGO

Consigning Details (Brides only):

  • You don’t pay a listing fee
  • You don’t have to spend a lot of time answering all the email inquires and questions
  • Your gown is showcased in a spectacular environment and posted online
  • Your gown gets special TLC from our qualified and spectacular bridal consultants
  • Your gown is seen by qualified brides from all over the country that visit whiteCHICAGO
What is the selling process?

Depending on the type of sale you want to complete (Listing or Consigning) the process is a little different.  The one thing that is the same is that the dresses have to be three years or less old and they have to be in fantastic condition.  The following outlines the process for Listing and Consigning:

Listing process (Brides, Maids & Moms):

1.You set up your Account
2.You submit your dress information
3.whiteXchange.com reviews submission ensuring qualification
4.whiteXchange.com notifies you of acceptance or rejection
5.If your gown is accepted, it is posted

Consignment process (for brides only):

1.You set up your Account
2.You submit your dress information
3.whiteXchange.com reviews submission ensuring qualification
4.whiteXchange.com notifies you of gown acceptance or rejection
5.You send or bring your gown into the store for final approval
6.Final price is mutually agreed upon
7.Gown is posted online and put in our whiteCHICAGO gown gallery

How much does it cost to sell my gown?

It depends on the way in which you would like to sell your gown

Listing – Your cost is just the listing fee; $50 for bridal gowns, $25 for maids and moms.

Consigning – There is no listing fees, when the gown sells you receive 50% of the net sales price.

Can I convert my Listing into a Consignment?

Yes, you can change your listing into a Consignment if it meets our instore qualifications (see "Does my gown qualify?") and is approved.  If the gown sells instore@whiteCHICAGO, we will refund your $50 listing fee.

Why can I only List maids and moms dresses and not Consign them at whiteCHICAGO?

Due to our store size we are now only accepting bridal gowns but you never know what is in our future – stay tuned!

How should I price my gown?

Here is our recommendation for selling your bridal gown:
Super high retail:     $5,000 and above we recommend 40-60% off
High retail:         $3,500 and above we recommend 30-40 % off
Med retail:         $2,000 and above we recommend 20-30% off
Average retail:      $2,000 and below we recommend 20-30% off

If you are not getting any serious inquires, you might want to lower your price or do a “best offer” sale.  If your gown is “final sale” and the bride cannot try on the gown, you might have to discount your price so it makes it worthwhile for the bride to take a chance.

Another option is to Consign your gown instore@whiteCHICAGO.  If the gown sells, we will refund your $50 listing fee.

In regards to Maids or Moms, we recommend 30-60% off.

How should I describe my gown?

The more you tell someone about the dress the better but be clear and succinct

  • Be honest about the potential defects – stains, missing beading, tears, etc. - list even the small ones
  • Give correct measurements (how do I measure myself?) (link)
  • Tell brides what is included with your gown (veil, headpiece, sash, etc.)
  • Tell your story if you think it gives the dress a personality – where you got it, where it has been, etc.

The more detailed information you give, the better qualified emails you will get!

Photographs – How do I take them and which ones should I post?

The most important thing to do in order to give your gown a great chance of selling is to post some terrific pictures.  The following are some guidelines to follow:

  • Take back, front, and a few detail shots
  • It is best to include a picture of you (or friend) in the gown as it gives the bride a more realistic look and feel
  • Don’t blur out your face – it detracts from the dress. If you must remove your identity, just take a picture of the dress from the neck down
  • Try not to take a picture in a room that is cluttered – you want the gown to stand out not the table with all your hair products!
  • If you know you are going to sell your gown before your wedding, have your photographer snap some pictures at the ceremony

If you are Consigning your gown, you can submit the designer’s pictures or your own for us to review and once the gown is qualified, we will take the pictures for you when it arrives in-store.

In store@whiteChicago

What is the difference between whiteCHICAGO and whiteXchange?

whiteCHICAGO is our flagship bridal gown brick and mortar retail location in the River North Arts District of Chicago.   We have over 300 designer bridal gowns from over 60 different designers rotating all the time.

whiteXchange.com is our premier online wedding gown Listing service.  It is our internet boutique where we have all of our instore@whiteCHICAGO gowns posted as well as a large inventory of gowns (bridal, maids + moms) that are Listed for sale by individuals.

Do I need an appointment on bridal gowns at whiteCHICAGO?

Yes and no!  You do need an appointment to try on gowns at whiteCHICAGO but if you would like to stop by and look through our gown gallery you don’t.   We do suggest appointments so you can get one-on-one service and attention but we do realize that sometimes it is nice to take a peak at our inventory and then make an appointment for a later date.

What do I need to know for my appointment?

We are excited to meet you and we want this to be a very fun and memorable experience for you.  Whether you are coming alone, with mom or with a few of your closest friends we will do our best so that you can relax and enjoy our unique environment.

The following is just some general information:

1.Our appointments are scheduled for one hour
2.We allow cameras, so feel free to bring one and take pictures
3.If you have any pictures of gowns you like, feel free to bring them to show us
4.If you would like to try on dresses with a bra, please wear or bring a strapless one
5.We are located on the lower level so there are some stairs to come down
6.To keep our gowns really clean, we ask you and any of your guests to remove their shoes upon entering our space - we provide clean socks and slippers
7.If you need to cancel or reschedule, we greatly appreciate 24 hours notice as we run waiting lists

What are some helpful hints to make my appointment a success?

1.Our dresses are off the rack so it is best to have an idea of what you like before you visit us – if you find a gown you love, we suggest you consider purchasing it as our inventory is constantly changing – we can’t order gowns and we don’t like disappointed brides!
2.For your first visit we recommend bringing no more than three people – we know it is an event but sometimes brides get confused when there are a lot of opinions and personal preferences.   Sometimes coming alone is great too.
3.Look through bridal magazines and pick out dresses you like – silhouette, neckline, fabric and details
4.Wear nude underwear – we suggest you wear full coverage as you will be more comfortable as our consultants will be with you in the dressing room
5.We ask that you try not to wear heavy make-up (none is the best!) even if your face does not touch the gown, sometimes you will touch your face and touch the gown and we like to keep the dresses as clean as possible for all our brides
6.Most dresses will not fit correctly so you will have to use your imagination – our consultants (a.k.a amazing stylists) will help you with fit and also show you restyling options - this is where the fun begins and your dress really becomes you!

What is the return policy?

Due to the nature of our business; all of our dresses are Consigned, gowns are final sale and sold AS IS, there are no refunds, no exchanges and no returns and whiteCHICAGO is NOT responsible for alterations, dry-cleaning or pressing.

Where does whiteCHICAGO get their dresses?

whiteCHICAGO obtains our bridal dresses from three main sources.  We work directly with some designers to help them lower their sample, discontinued and over-cut inventory.  We also work with bridal salons from across the country and assist them with samples, misorders and closeouts, and finally we work with past brides and sell once-wed gowns.

What type of designers and sizes will I find at whiteCHICAGO?

You will find great couture gowns at our boutique.  We only accept dresses that retail for over $1,500 in exceptional condition.  We typically have over 300 gowns from over 60 different designers.  You can find well-know designers from Vera Wang to Monique Lhuillier as well as gowns from up-and-coming, hard to find and local designers too.

The majority of our gowns are samples and most of the samples are size 10 so this means that a lot of our gowns fit a street size 6-8 bride perfectly.   (see Alterations:  How much can you alter a dress?) (link).  We do have a great selection of gowns that fit a street size 0-8 and street size 10-12 bride.  Unfortunately, we don’t have a large selection of street size 14+ but we are constantly trying to increase our inventory.

What does Consignment mean and what is the condition of the gowns?

Consignment gowns are gowns that we don’t own – we are acting as an agent to sell the owner’s gown.  When the gown sells, we give 50% of the net sale to the owner and we keep 50%.

Our Consignment gowns are in very good condition.   We are very strict and only accept gowns that meet our qualification standards which include age (3 years or less), condition (excellent) and price (retails for over $1,500).

Scams

Buyers and Sellers Beware! – What things should I look for?

Scammers prey on both buyers and sellers.  Please ignore any suspicious emails and beware of any misspelled or awkward emails offering to send more than the dress amount in exchange for a shipping company/shipper pick-up.
Always use secure payments services to sell a dress (www.escrow.com and www.paypal.com).  Never use check, money orders, wire transfers, etc. for payment or acceptance of your dress.

Example Scams

One of the most frequent scams we have heard about is when a buyer contacts a seller and sends a check for the dress but the amount of the check is greater than the selling price.  They request that you cash the check and then send them the dress and the difference.  When the bank or credit union finds out the check is fake, you have already sent the dress and you are out the dress and the whole amount of the check!

Payment & Shipping

What are my payment options (both Lister and Consigner)?

Escrow.com works like a traditional escrow service acting as an intermediary creating a secure transaction for both buyer and seller www.escrow.com
Paypal is another secure transaction for both buyer and seller but remember they only insure good up to $1,000.  Never use money orders, cashiers check, check, wire transfers, etc.

What should I know about shipping?

If you are a Lister selling your gown, you always want to put the dress in a garment bag – preferably the one that came with the dress and pack it in a box that fits the gown comfortably.  Never put colored tissue paper or colored packing paper in the box in case the box becomes damp – there is a chance this could happen and the color may bleed on your gown.

If you are a Buyer, always make sure the seller insures your gown.  We recommend buying insurance that covers the retail price not the purchase price in case you have to replace the gown.  You can also request shipment with UPS COD service.  You pay UPS when you get the gown (www.ups.com).
