Winter Wedding Trends

January 12, 2010 by: Laura

Winter brings to mind cold, dark and bleak – especially in the Midwest, but winter has a lot to offer!  It is always fun to make a snowman or go sledding or ice skating and then come in to hot chocolate (next time try it spiked with vanilla vodka – idea courtesy of Fig).  It also provides a perfect, pristine background for a wedding.  Not only are they less popular, which is great for the budget conscious bride, but they also allow you more options for flowers, dress fabrics and even footwear!  Below are the Winter Trends we are seeing with the start of 2010:

 -          Silk satin: This fabric is heavier than other silks and is a great option for a gown.  Once pressed, silk satin looks gorgeous and even all night long.

-          Lace: With all the vintage inspired weddings these days, lace is HOT.  You choose a little or a lot, you can even take some and wrap it around your flowers to match your dress! (or try lace on your invitations - check out what Lovebird has to offer)

-          Gowns with sleeves: From cap to one shoulder to ¾, sleeves make a dress both ceremony appropriate and add another dimension to the dress – not to mention you won’t be pulling on your dress while you dance the night away.

-          Ball gowns: It takes a certain bride to love the look of a ball gown, but if that is you – flaunt it!  Who doesn’t love the idea of a princess inspired wedding?

-          Sparkly embellishments: Although these are great all year long, in the winter they really stand out.

-          A cloak or fur wrap: Add some drama to your gown, and stay warm, while taking outdoor photos with a fur wrap or a cloak in a bright color that matches your flowers or your shoes.

-          Peplum skirts: Layering is very popular and this way you can add additional dimension to the dress.  Play around with it, find one that is a different fabric than the rest of the dress or even pull some color into it.

-          Feathers:  Sticking out of a bouquet, on a headband or hairpiece, feathers add a little playful edge to the gown and the bride.

-          Boots:  That’s right!  Now you can get wedding boots to walk down the aisle in.  They are very trendy and definitely make a statement. (James Ciccotti has a great pair with mink fur trim!)

-          COLOR: This might be the kicker.  From champagne to platinum to blush and even icy blues, color in wedding gowns is so hot right now.

If a colored gown or a peplum skirt is a little too much for you, play around with color in your flowers or invitations and add little pops of something unexpected, like sparkles or feathers.
